United Way Day of Caring
September 11, 2009

Volunteers from SUPSHIP Newport News and NASA came out this year to lend a helping hand at three DHCDC sites. The teams proved they definitely weren't afraid of getting their hands dirty on behalf of our children. From hauling off tree branches to hanging pictures, these volunteers really made a difference. We treated them all to a pizza lunch as a gesture of our gratitude.

Shell Road site

The big project at this site was clearing off tree branches
from the property.

Our volunteers hauled truckloads of branches to the landfill so children and visitors wouldn't have to get past this giant obstacle.

Our now-expert tree haulers, otherwise known
as engineers from SUPSHIP!

Lincoln Street site

SUPSHIP team members volunteered at this site
to paint the bathroom floors.

These hard workers made our bathrooms sparkle and shine,
with their fresh coat of paint!

Other SUPSHIP volunteers helped care for
the preschoolers in our two classes there.

Educational computer games are a great opportunity to bond!

This volunteer seems to have found a great fortune
in the classroom (if only we could compensate our
supporters so grandly!)

Sunset Creek site

This site needed the most work, as we had only just moved into it. This NASA employee painted bare spots on our kitchen walls.

Two SUPSHIP employees cleaned out our cluttered storage room, including wiping down toys and dusting...

...and when they were done, you could actually see (and use!) the floor! Their hours of hard work really paid off.

These two NASA employees hung an extremely heavy dry-erase board in the Communication Office, so our PR and Development staff can conduct business.

The head of the SUPSHIP team secured our front-porch rocking chairs to the ground, to prevent theft.

Another SUPSHIP employee, who owns his own landscape company, edged and mowed our entire property.

Lunch time! Pizza, lemonade and cookies for all, compliments of the very grateful DHCDC staff.

Our worn-out volunteers get their energy back over a hot slice
(or three!) of pizza.

The crew makes use of the great open atrium
in our new building.

Volunteers enjoy flipping through our annual report
to learn more about DHCDC.
