United Way Day of Caring
September 12, 2008

DHCDC was fortunate to have three companies (all banks!) volunteer to spend the day helping out at one of our sites. On a hot Friday morning, representatives from Old Point, TowneBank and Wachovia arrived at our sites ready to work and already wearing a smile. From giving Spanish lessons to painting walls, these volunteers really made a difference. We treated each team to a pizza lunch as a gesture of our gratitude.

Suzie Cox makes new friends on the DHCDC playground,
where she helped keep order in the midst of chaos!

Suzie Cox shows proper handwashing technique
to some cute and energetic preschoolers.

Lending a hand—or two—for a little foot,
Karen Knick demonstrates excellence in shoe-tying.

Enjoying the latest in preschool technology,
Sharon Davidson works with two children on their numbers.

Henry Mills takes a playground break with
some admirers after helping in classrooms all morning.

Cheryl Ziff of TowneBank gives a fun-filled Spanish lesson
to her rapt audience of 4-year-olds.

The children learn how to say "trabajo" (work)
in Spanish as they build their new vocabulary.

Sheri Moore helps a new friend as the team
led children in making their own sombreros.

The kids have fun sporting their newly made sombreros,
as they admire each other's handiwork.

Team Wachovia included Emilie Wisniewski, Jeff Clemons, Jo Weiss, Deck Hankins, Sherry Thacker, Kris Bevins, Mike Jakubowski , Paul Muse, Tiffany Smilor, and Sabrina Anderson. Not pictured: Alexis Swann, Billie Ackerman, Tammy Petersen

Alexis Swann, who said she was willing to get dirty at
Day of Caring this year, gets down with kitchen grease.

"My name is Sabrina Anderson and I approved this picture."
Sabrina also tackled the kitchen and its many fingerprints.

With a broom handle and a prayer, Mike Jakubowski knocks down one of several wasp nests on our indoor toddler playground, risking himself to protect our smallest students!

Sherry Thacker and Kris Bevins munch on pizza after a long morning of cleaning our outdoor storage sheds! Their hard work really showed in the now-pristine and organized storage.

Tiffany Smilor, an expectant mom herself, gets in some hands-on practice while helping entertain our adorable mobile infants.

The Worker Bees class really took to Billie Ackerman, who read stories and did the "beanbag dance" with these 3-year-olds. In fact, Billie stayed past Day of Caring hours and didn't leave until most DHCDC employees were heading home! What dedication!
