United Way Day of Caring
September 10, 2010

Once again, SUPSHIP Newport News came through for the children by sending volunteers for this annual community service day. Thirteen caring individuals spent the day painting, drilling, hanging and hauling at our new home in the Mary Peake Center. This team went above and beyond what we already knew of their great volunteer spirit, and for that we thank them from the bottom of our hearts!

Day of Caring
Ocean's Thirteen!
SUPSHIP volunteers sit in our flagpole area for an al fresco lunch (yummy food from Jason's Deli,
accompanied by volunteer leader Mark's even-yummier homemade barbecue).

Day of Caring
Hanging dozens of paper towel and soap dispensers was a
much-needed (and very tedious!) job our volunteers tackled.
Day of Caring
Other drilling projects included hanging bulletin boards,
coat racks, and wall art in offices and the main lobby.
Day of Caring
The wall tile decorations are vintage from the building's elementary
school days, but Cip enjoyed pretending to add to them!
Day of Caring
MO and Teresa made the Program Director's office homelike
for students and parents by artfully hanging framed prints.

Day of Caring
This dynamic duo also did their share of drilling
for the paper-towel-dispenser project
.

Meanwhile, another crew was hard at work outside making our entrance sign more appealing—and more visible! Mark brought materials as Kathy trimmed back the overgrown crape myrtles.

Day of Caring
Belinda helped Kathy prune the right side while Yong cleaned
the cloudy plexiglas that protects our new sign insert.
Day of Caring
Kathy, Belinda and Yong model their makeshift trashbag smocks as they paint the metal sign case (unfortunately, while their shirts were protected, their jeans ended up sporting a permanent sample of our bright blue paint color...)
